Floating Volume Viewer presents a novel environment where the viewers can slice the 3D image floating in the air and see what’s inside interactively.
This direct manipulation interface consists of a transparent acrylic plate with a 6-DOF motion sensor and an autostereoscopic display based on CIVI (Coarse Integral Volumetric Imaging) technology, which combines the multiview solution based on integral imaging and the volumetric solution using multiple image planes [1-4].
The viewer can slice the floating 3D object presented by the CIVI display with the transparent plate and see the arbitrary cross section of the object (Fig. 1). Since the CIVI display can present 3D images that corresponds to the viewing positions like holograms (Fig. 2), multiple users can share this experience at the same time.
